MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fat found in coconut and palm kernel oils. MCT oil is one of the six ingredients in BurnForce.
Why MCTs are different
Most dietary fats are long-chain and need a lengthy digestive process. Medium-chain fats are absorbed more quickly and sent straight to the liver, where they can be converted to ketones. That is why MCT oil is popular with people eating low-carb.
Types of MCT
- C8 (caprylic acid): converts to ketones most readily
- C10 (capric acid): a little slower, still ketogenic
- C6 and C12: less commonly used in concentrated oils
Calories still count
MCT oil is a fat, with roughly 100 or more calories per tablespoon. It can fit into a keto plan, but it adds energy. It is not a calorie-free fat burner.
Side effects
Large amounts, especially if you start too fast, can cause cramps, bloating or diarrhea. Starting small and increasing gradually is the usual advice.
Using it in food
MCT oil blends into coffee, smoothies and dressings. In capsule form, it is a convenient alternative, as in a daily formula. Pair it with whole foods from MyPlate-style meals, and see BHB ketone salts explained for the other half of the ketone story.
