BHB (beta-hydroxybutyrate) is the most abundant ketone in your blood during ketosis. It is a core ingredient in BurnForce.
Endogenous vs exogenous
Endogenous ketones are made by your own liver when carbohydrates are low. Exogenous ketones come from outside the body. BHB salts bind BHB to minerals such as sodium, calcium, magnesium or potassium so it can be taken by mouth.
What do they do?
Taken orally, BHB salts can raise blood ketone levels for a few hours. Researchers have studied them for exercise performance and mental focus, with mixed results. It is important to understand that raising ketones does not by itself burn body fat; weight outcomes still depend on energy balance, diet and activity.
Possible side effects
- Stomach upset, nausea or loose stools, especially at higher amounts
- An added mineral load (sodium, calcium, magnesium or potassium) that may matter for people with kidney issues or on low-sodium diets
Who should be careful
People with type 1 diabetes or taking SGLT2-inhibitor diabetes medicines can be at risk of ketoacidosis when ketones rise. Anyone with diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy or nursing should speak with a doctor first. See our checklist for talking to your doctor.
How it fits with MCT oil
BHB provides ketones directly, while MCT oil provides fats the body can convert to ketones. Together they are a common pairing in keto-style routines.
