Keto Basics: What a Keto-Style Eating Plan Really Is

Keto Basics · Published October 15, 2026 · 4 min read

The ketogenic diet is a very low-carbohydrate way of eating that has become popular for weight management and steady energy. Before you try it, it helps to understand what it actually involves.

How it works

Your body normally runs mostly on glucose from carbohydrates. When carbohydrate intake drops very low, usually around 20 to 50 grams per day, the liver starts producing ketones from fat, and many tissues, including the brain, can use them as fuel. This state is called ketosis. It typically takes several days to a few weeks of consistent eating to get there.

What a keto plate looks like

  • Protein: eggs, fish, poultry, tofu, moderate portions of meat
  • Fats: olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds and fatty fish
  • Low-carb vegetables: leafy greens, broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower
  • Limited: bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, sugary drinks and most fruit

What to expect

Many people notice reduced appetite and an early drop on the scale, partly from water loss. Others experience a short adjustment period, often called the “keto flu”; see our guide to adjusting gently.

Where supportive formulas fit

A formula such as BurnForce is designed to complement a keto-style routine with ingredients like BHB ketone salts and MCT oil. It does not replace the diet itself, and no capsule produces weight loss without healthy habits.

Who should be careful

Very low-carb diets are not suitable for everyone. People with type 1 diabetes, kidney or liver conditions, a history of pancreatitis or eating disorders, and anyone who is pregnant or nursing should speak with a doctor first.
