Many people starting a very low-carb diet notice a rough patch in the first days, informally called the “keto flu”. It is not an infection, but an adjustment period.
Common signs
- Headache and tiredness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Irritability and trouble concentrating
- Muscle cramps and constipation
Why it happens
Cutting carbs lowers insulin, which causes the kidneys to release more sodium and water. Fluid and electrolyte shifts, plus the body adapting to a new fuel mix, are the usual explanation.
Gentle ways to adjust
- Ease in: reduce carbohydrates over a week or two rather than overnight
- Drink water: steadily through the day
- Mind electrolytes: include salted broth, leafy greens, avocado, nuts and seeds for sodium, potassium and magnesium, unless your doctor limits any of these
- Sleep well and move gently: walking beats heavy training in the first week
- Add fiber: non-starchy vegetables and seeds help with constipation
Where supportive ingredients fit
Formulas with MCT oil and BHB salts, such as BurnForce, are intended to help ease the transition, but they do not guarantee you will skip it.
When to get help
Seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or last more than a couple of weeks, or if you have persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid breathing or confusion. MedlinePlus has more information on warning signs.
